For the right person, Timaru – located between Christchurch and Dunedin – really is the very best of both worlds. We think you’ll find there is time for more here – professionally and personally.
As a nurse at SCDHB you can go places professionally if that’s what you’re keen on or you can just do a damn good job doing what you trained to – caring for our community. Whatever your level of commitment it will be catered for.
And personally? Simply put you can get a life. Own your own home or lifestyle block – you can afford to; enjoy the outdoors, a coffee or perhaps walk the children to school in the time you’d usually spend commuting. You can snow ski or go yachting and all in one day if you choose to. You can access hospital owned holiday homes at Lake Tekapo at rates you’ll really like. You can park for free and know you’re secure walking to your car after dark. There is so much within your grasp here and the time to do it.
A little about usSCDHB is the fourth smallest of the DHBs in New Zealand with an operating budget of $66 million pa. Many put our friendly and informal, though no less professional, atmosphere down to this small size.
We consistently provide higher levels of service than required under our contracts and our community’s access to non acute medical procedures would rate highly by any standards. Our facilities include:
Timaru Hospital is a 24 hour general hospital servicing a district population of 55,000. With 133 beds we provide surgical, medical, paediatric, age related care, maternity, psychiatric, district and public health services. We are supported by visiting specialists on a regular basis.
Talbot Park is a 78 bed hospital level long-stay aged residential care facility. Its nearly $1 million dementia care unit was opened in 2005 bringing to 29 its total of D-6 dementia beds. D-6 is the highest level of dementia care available and Talbot Park is the only facility in South Canterbury to provide that level of care.
About our region
South Canterbury is located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Just two hours drive to the north is Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city while a drive two hours south will see you in Dunedin, the Edinburgh of the south. By air you’re just one hours flight from New Zealand’s capital city and arguably cultural hub, Wellington.
Timaru is the largest urban centre in the region – a long established and wealthy rural service centre. Our resident population of approximately 28,000, enjoy access to moderately priced real estate, excellent educational facilities and an abundance of sporting and recreational facilities – many of them of international standard.
Outside of working hours you’ll find Timaru and surrounding districts offer an amazing array of the outdoor pursuits for which New Zealand is famed. It sits at the doorstep of many inland lakes where sailing, water-skiing, boating, windsurfing and fishing are popular pastimes. At least five ski fields are within easy driving of Timaru itself. Whatever yours or your families interests, we challenge you’ll find something to satisfy them here.
Timaru offers all that is comparable to any larger centre yet without the associated hassles.

Opportunities here and how to make the most of them
We employ registered surgical, medical, AT&R, Theatre and ICU/CCU nurses. In addition we’ve opportunities for District Nurses and Keyworkers within some of our Psychiatric teams.
Our nursing staff can be quoted as saying “here, you can do what a nurse is meant to – care for your patients and know you’ve got the time to do it properly”. Whether it is our size or our relatively informal atmosphere that lends itself to this we’re a little unsure. Whatever the reason, it pays dividends for our patients and our staff – whatever their occupation.
As a registered nurse at SCDHB you will not be a number. You’ll find yourself being able to get to know nursing, and other staff, outside your immediate department and, you’ll be on first names terms with these same people.
Looking to fast track your career? Nursing at SCDHB offers professional challenge and stimulus. You may find opportunities here you’ll be chasing for years in a larger organisation or centre.
And, on the flip side of this, if you’re not chasing a career but want to do what you trained to in a less ‘frenetic’ fashion you can.
